Background of the study
Hashtag neologisms on Twitter represent a dynamic facet of morphological variation in Nigerian digital discourse. Users innovate by blending words, abbreviating phrases, and coining new terms through hashtag campaigns that capture contemporary cultural and social phenomena (Akinyele, 2023). These linguistic innovations reflect rapid lexical change driven by the platform’s concise format and the viral nature of hashtags. This study appraises the morphological variation manifested in hashtag neologisms, comparing their features across different Twitter movements. The analysis focuses on the processes of word formation and semantic shift, highlighting how digital activism and social trends contribute to the evolution of Nigerian online language (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
While hashtag neologisms are a notable feature of Nigerian Twitter discourse, there is limited research systematically comparing their morphological variations. Existing studies often overlook the intricate word formation processes behind these neologisms, limiting our understanding of digital lexical innovation. This study seeks to address this gap by examining and comparing hashtag neologisms to evaluate their impact on Nigerian language practices (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze morphological features of hashtag neologisms on Twitter.
  2. To compare variations in word formation across different hashtag movements.
  3. To assess the overall impact of these neologisms on digital language innovation.

Research questions

  1. What morphological features characterize hashtag neologisms on Twitter?
  2. How do these features vary across different digital movements?
  3. What is the impact of hashtag-driven morphological innovation on Nigerian language?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it deepens our understanding of digital lexical innovation through the lens of hashtag neologisms, contributing to linguistic theory and digital communication strategies in Nigeria (Akinyele, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to Twitter and focuses exclusively on hashtag neologisms within Nigerian digital discourse, excluding other platforms and offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Morphological Variation: Differences in word formation processes and structures.
  • Hashtag Neologism: A newly coined word or expression emerging from hashtag use.
  • Digital Lexicon: The vocabulary that evolves through online communication.
